The Bright Future of WordPress + Minimal Themes

We’ve been keeping a close eye on the progress and rapid development of WordPress 5.0 which features a new block-based post editor nicknamed Gutenberg.

For the past several months we have been working hard to ensure WordPress 5.0 compatibility and also to offer Gutenberg support for all of our themes, starting with our Signature themes (Made and Eero) as they are the richest in terms of features and performance. Our Basic themes (Milo, Eames, Dorsey and Wright) are also in the process receiving a complete code base overhaul to optimize compatibility, performance and security.

We’re making great progress, but we’re not there yet. This means that if WordPress 5.0 is released before our next round of updates you should wait for my official announcement (check email and blog) before updating your site.

As of now, the WordPress 5.0 release date has been pushed back from it’s previous target of November 27th. The new release date is yet to be announced.

We are committed to the exciting future of WordPress, to the artists and creative professionals around the world who trust our themes to present their online portfolio, and to successfully integrating the new Gutenberg editor into the Minimal WordPress theme catalog.

  1. Hi,
Any info when new update to Made theme will be available? Also documentation, as currently I am having issues to add new galleries with new WP editor.

    • Hi Janis,

We are working diligently to have all theme updates available by the end of January. In the latter stages of WordPress 5 development the update/release schedule was rapid which made it particularly challenging for theme makers to keep up with. Things are coming along nicely, however, and we plan to offer compatibility with the brand new block editor. In the meantime, if you have already updated to WordPress 5 and are experiencing any issues with your website please install the Classic Editor plugin to restore the previous version of the WordPress text editor.

As a reminder, if you have not already asked your web host to update your server configuration to PHP 7 please do so now because PHP 7 has been proven to offer enhanced security and performance for WordPress.

      Thanks for the comment!

      • Hi Brian,

Any news regarding the updates mentioned above? I see from your comment above that you were originally shooting for the end of January. I’ve installed the classic editor plugin for now, but am anxious to begin playing with the new block editor. Thanks!

        • Jeff,

With the Classic Editor plugin offering stability and the opportunity to maintain your site as you normally would before WordPress 5/Gutenberg update, we have decided to take this opportunity to make this update part of a larger and more comprehensive update to all of our themes, especially Milo, Eames, Dorsey and Wright. We are now targeting March for the release and we’ll go from there.

          Thank you!

          • Hi Brian,
Any news on the update schedule? Seems like constantly slipping away.

          • Hi Gorazd,

I have been personally involved in testing Gutenberg/Block Editor compatibility and offering revision notes for our developer. It is very much an iterative process. We are making progress, albeit, much slower than I anticipated. With the Classic Editor plugin offering solid stability for WordPress 5, we are making this update part of a larger and more comprehensive code base overhaul.

            Many thanks,
            Brian

  2. Brian,

Is there anyway we get a feature that allows PDF generation of images? If not do have any plugins you would recommend. Clients sometime like to create PDFs of images they loved from my site for inspo shoot day.

    • Hi Brandon,

Our themes do no currently support the capability to build PDF portfolios for download. Unfortunately, I am not aware of a plugin that offers this as well. Do let us know if you find anything like this in your search. If you are open to having a child theme built with this customization you might consider posting your needs on a site like Codeable where you’ll find expert WordPress freelance development.
